It was not to be the white gown and coat-and-tail wedding that she had dreamed about—that she had once before. This time, Viva didn’t really care. When she arrived at the train station in St. Paul on March 7, 1903, Viva Fitchpatrick only cared that she would be marrying the man she loved. She didn’t think it odd that when Samuel—who had told his boss that he wanted the day off to meet some friends across the river in St. Paul—came to take her to the court commissioner’s office, he was rushed and a bit out of sorts.

“Make it short, old man,” Sam Hargrave told the commissioner as he swept into his office. “We are in a hurry.”

The bride was also in a hurry. It had been far too long since she and her man had been together.

The next day, on March 8, 1903, when Viva wrote to her mother telling her of the wedding, her new husband added the following postscript:
